RUNNING THE RACE

By Pastor Ayo-Simeon Agbelusi

The Lord Jesus Christ, through His earthly ministry, commissioned us to run a race that ultimately leads to eternal dwelling with our heavenly Father. This race is ongoing, and we must not stop until we are perfected in Christ. Every child of God is on this race, and our lifestyle remains a clear evidence of our commitment to finishing well and finishing strong.

The Word of the Lord declares:

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1–2 (KJV)

Beloved, you are not alone on this journey. The battles you face—whether with sin, distractions, discouragement, or the pressures of this world—are not uncommon. The same race set before you is also set before your fellow brethren. God has made grace abundantly available, not only to start this race, but to finish it strong.

Running well requires intentionality. The Scripture admonishes us to lay aside every weight—not just sin, but anything that slows our walk with God, weakens our devotion, or dulls our spiritual sensitivity. The race is not a sprint; it is a journey that demands patience, endurance, discipline, and unwavering focus.

Our strength to continue comes from looking unto Jesus. He is both the Author and the Finisher of our faith. When the road becomes rough, when the burden feels heavy, and when the temptation to stop arises, we fix our gaze on Him. He endured the cross, despised the shame, and yet finished His assignment victoriously. In Him, we find both our example and our empowerment.

Do not compare your pace with others. Stay faithful to the race set before you. Keep your heart pure, your conscience clear, and your hope alive. The crown awaits those who endure to the end.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for the grace to be called into this glorious race. I receive strength to lay aside every weight and every distraction that seeks to slow me down. Help me to run with patience, faith, and unwavering focus on Christ. I declare that I will not grow weary, I will not give up, and I will finish my race strong, to the glory of Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Remember: Don’t stop running. Don’t look back. The finish line is closer than you think.
