THE COMPASSIONATE SHEPHERD

By Pastor Ayo-Simeon Agbelusi

Within the heart of a true shepherd lies compassion and true love. No one succeeds in Christian ministry without genuine love for the flock. The calling demands that you remain tender, lovely and constantly moved to help the weak and strengthen the brethren and also provide rest for every weary soul.

Throughout the Gospels, we repeatedly see the heart of Jesus revealed through His compassion. When He looked at the crowds, He did not merely see people passing through their daily routines. He saw their burdens, their confusion, and their spiritual need.

“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” — Matthew 9:36 (KJV)

Matthew describes them as sheep without a shepherd—wandering, weary, and vulnerable. Without guidance, sheep easily become lost or endangered. In the same way, people searching for meaning and direction often struggle under the weight of life.

Jesus responded to this condition not with indifference but with deep compassion. His heart moved toward those who were hurting and spiritually scattered. That compassion led Him to teach, to heal, and ultimately to give His life for the salvation of the world.

The same compassionate Shepherd still sees people today. He sees the weariness many carry, the questions they wrestle with, and the burdens that seem too heavy to bear. His heart has not changed.

If you feel weary or uncertain today, remember that Christ does not turn away from you. The Shepherd who saw the crowds with compassion still calls people to Himself and offers rest for their souls.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the compassion of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. When I feel weary or uncertain, remind me that Christ sees me and cares deeply for my life. Help me follow His guidance and trust His care each day. Also give me a heart that reflects His compassion toward others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
